Doctorates and doctoral candidates

The daily challenges of treating patients constantly give rise to exciting questions for which we seek solutions. If there are none in the literature, we try to find these solutions ourselves. So far, a whole series of studies have been published in this context.

The following doctoral students were awarded their doctorates

  • Dr. Christian Siedler
  • Dr. Christiane Heilmann
  • Dr. Christina Stoica
  • Dr. Mehran Maghsudi
  • Dr. Angela Torres-Quintero
  • Dr. Minja Popovic
  • Dr. Melanie Bock
  • Dr. Aziz Abdullah
  • Dr. Kai Vahle-Hinz
  • Dr. Joel Nettey-Marbell
  • Dr. Arthur Rybczynski

Current doctoral students

  • Jakob Röhl
  • Jakob Metz
  • Stefanie Popa

Doctoral requirements and procedure

Based on the experience of all previous doctoral projects and in compliance with the guidelines of the Department of Medicine at the University of Hamburg, we have developed principles for successful doctoral projects. For your orientation, you will find them described chronologically below:

Basic qualification

  • Competent handling of Microsoft Word for use with all formatting, numbering, structuring and referencing functions; procedure for linking and integrating graphics; procedure for integrating references from Endnote (see below)
  • Competent use of Microsoft Excel and/or modern statistical programs for sorting data and evaluating test results
  • Competent use of Mindjet MindManager to capture and structure concepts in advance and only get started after coordination (saves everyone involved unacceptable duplication of work!)
  • Competent handling of Endnote with secure mastery of all functions to manage and exchange literature data at a contemporary level

Without these basic qualifications, a successful doctoral project at the UKE is impossible.

Project outline and introduction

  • Doctoral supervisor and prospective doctoral candidate discuss the chosen topic together (“What exactly is it about?”)
  • Prospective doctoral student prepares written summary on one page
  • Doctoral supervisor checks the “summary” submitted by the doctoral candidate
  • If the summary hits the nail on the head, it becomes a one-page “introduction” to the dissertation
  • Prospective doctoral student prepares project outline
  • Doctoral supervisor checks project outline
  • prospective doctoral candidate submits the project outline
  • Department examines and confirms the doctoral project
  • If the department makes a positive decision, the doctoral project will be accepted.

Literature research and overview

  • PhD student looking for rough literature on the topic
  • Doctoral candidate defines search strategy and documents it (as a mind map)
  • Presentation: Doctoral candidate presents the search strategy based on the mind map in presentation mode
  • Doctoral student researches the literature on the basis of this search strategy, refines the search strategy independently if necessary and documents this
  • Doctoral student structures the literature found in EndNote and deposits the literature in EndNote as pdf
  • Presentation: Doctoral student presents the result of the research using EndNote
  • Doctoral student drafts an argumentation as a mind map based on the researched literature and presents it
  • Presentation: Doctoral candidate
  • After proofreading, the doctoral candidate creates a literature review in text form with citations as an “introduction”.
  • Doctoral supervisor checks these, including the bibliography with final mark, and approves.

Material + Methods

  • Doctoral supervisor and doctoral candidate plan experiments based on the literature review
  • Doctoral student creates experimental plan based on this
  • The doctoral supervisor and doctoral candidate check whether an application to the Ethics Committee is required and submit it if necessary.
  • Doctoral student carries out preliminary test and documents the results
  • Presentation: PhD student presents results and their documentation
  • Doctoral student carries out experiments and documents the results as discussed
  • Doctoral candidate writes down procedure and planned evaluation
  • Supervisor reviews and approves the chapter “Material and Methods”

Results

  • Doctoral student carries out experiments and documents the results as discussed
  • Doctoral student evaluates the results as discussed
  • Doctoral student creates diagrams based on the analyzed data
  • Presentation: Doctoral candidate presents the results using the diagrams, doctoral supervisor checks, corrects if necessary and determines which data will appear in the text and which will only be published as an appendix.
  • Doctoral candidate writes text section “Results”
  • Doctoral supervisor checks chapter results and releases this!

Discussion

  • Doctoral supervisor discusses the points to be discussed with the doctoral candidate
  • Doctoral candidate uses this to create a mind map as the “central theme” of the “discussion” text
  • Presentation: Doctoral candidate presents the red thread to the supervisor, who checks, corrects and approves it
  • Doctoral student writes text of the “Discussion” (Chapter 5)
  • Doctoral supervisor checks the “Discussion” chapter and releases it

Publication in English

  • Publication of the study in an international journal in accordance with the new doctoral regulations.
  • Doctoral candidate is first author; doctoral supervisor is senior author; other participants become co-authors in the order of their share.
