CMD specialists at Falkenried

In Hamburg, Falkenried 88 has developed into a center of specialized medical facilities, including the CMD Center Hamburg-Eppendorf as a leading facility for the diagnosis of craniomandibular dysfunctions (CMD), teeth grinding and clenching (bruxism) and tooth wear.

What are craniomandibular dysfunctions (CMD)?

Craniomandibular dysfunctions (CMD) are characterized by a disturbed interaction between the teeth, jaw joints and chewing muscles. Normally, this interaction runs smoothly and people are not even consciously aware of it. Disruptions to normal function, on the other hand, lead to pain in the area of the masticatory muscles, jaw joints and teeth – or result in functional restrictions. You can find typical symptoms here.

In simple cases, CMD is fortunately limited to overloading of the masticatory muscles and ends by itself or after dental treatment with a “grinding splint”.

When should you contact CMD specialists?

If the pain does not go away on its own within 4 weeks, you should seek dental advice. And if the pain does not subside within 4 weeks even after normal dental treatment with a grinding splint, it makes sense to consult a specialist – if only to prevent the pain from becoming chronic. This applies in particular to cases where there are already functional disorders in the masticatory organ, such as

  • Restrictions or blockages of the jaw opening, or
  • discomfort and additional joint cracking, as well as
  • discomfort and uneven occlusion of your teeth, or
  • Significant tooth wear overall or localized breakage of tooth parts, and
  • additional stress-induced tinnitus or dizziness.

In these cases, the situation is complicated and requires differentiated functional diagnostic examinations and individual treatments.

For such situations, there are CMD specialists with special knowledge in the diagnosis and treatment of CMD. The new diagnostic scheme of the relevant scientific association, the German Society for Functional Diagnostics and Therapy(DGFDT), even explicitly distinguishes simple diagnostics (Level I) from those performed by CMD specialists (Level II).
